German school-system (Land North Rhine-Westphalia)

In Germany school, from the age of 6 through 15, is mandatory, and in public state-run schools, it's free. All children enter in the same programme, but at the age of 10, they go to one of four types of schools.

Theoretical selection: 33% Hauptschule (lower level)--33% Realschule (middle level)--33% Gymnasium (upper level) (or comprehensive school=Gesamtschule).

Reality (Bonn): 15% Hauptschule--25% Realschule--30% state-run Gymnasium--25% church-run Gymnasium--5% Gesamtschule
