The Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Gymnasium
is a highschool close to the city center of Bonn. The
principal (headmaster) is Mr Uwe Bettscheider.
The Ernst Moritz Arndt-Gymnasium
has got a long tradition since it has already been founded in 1882. 57 teachers form the
staff of our school and about 950 students/pupils attend our school. A state high
schools (Gymnasium) structure starts after four years of elementary education
(Grundschule) and comprises 9 levels. These levels are broken down into two main
units: Secondary Education I (Sek I) from level 5 to 10 and Secondary Education II (Sek
II) for grades 11 to 13. Students here are given the opportunity to focus on
individual subjects.
(German, History, Geography, Social Sciences, English, Latin,
French, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Computer education, Music, Arts, Sports,
Literature, Philosophy, Roman Catholic and Protestant Scripture)
The main subjects according to this scheme are taught
five hours a week (Leistungskurs), whereas the other subjects are taught three
hours a week (Grundkurs). A typical syllabus thus comprises about 30 hours of
teaching a week.
Grades 5 and 6 (UK: 1st and 2nd form) are called orientation
level (Orientierungsstufe), providing teachers and parents with the overall picture
of the individual student's achievements and with a help to decide whether attending
Gymnasium had been the right decision. (Possible alternatives:
Hauptschule, Realschule or Gesamtschule)
A first degree can be obtained after Sek I, however, the classical educational aim of
Gymnasium is the "Abitur", i. e. final examinations that a student needs to pass
at the end of grade 13. Abitur represents as well the formal entitlement to enter a
university as the starting point of a higher vocational training.
Most pupils choose the English language as their
first foreign language, but Latin is also offered. In the 7th grade French is
offered as the second foreign language or English if the pupils started with the Latin
language in the 5th grade. In addition sciences, humanities and other subjects
are available for all grades.
Some pupils choose in the 9th grade a combination of English and Geography and
in the 10th grade History in the English language.
Bonn (The Federal City) was the former capital (1949-99) of the Federal Republic of Germany. The city of Bonn is situated near Cologne on the banks of "Father" Rhine in the western parts of the Federal Republic.
Our school has got five foreign exchange programmes since 1990 with the "Boy's Division of Bolton School" in Bolton/England and since 1995 with "Belmont Highschool" Massachussetts, US. EMA is also proud to maintain partnerships with schools in Poland, Italy and France.
